Actions of firms that contribute to social welfare, beyond what is required for profit maximization, are classified as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). While business scholars debated the legitimacy of CSR, consumers and investors developed clear preferences for socially responsible firms. Big corporations, in large part, responded positively, making CSR an important element of strategic management.
Philanthropy and CSR are not new words for Indian business. From times immemorial, Indian businesses have taken the responsibility of integrating themselves with social structure of the society. In modern businesses, we have glowing examples of Birla Group doing their bit in doing CSR and Philanthropy.
