Munich is a typical city of Central Europe having a character of its own and dotted with history. City is clean, easy to understand and boasts of its own public transportation system with Trams, U Bahn and S Bahn. City also is fond of cyclists and has dedicated lane for cycling. City is full of cobbled stone streets and historical buildings with very charming autumn flowers at all places.
Nymphenburg Palace
Nymphenburg Palace owes its foundation as a summer residence to the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne, Max Emanuel, who was born in 1662 to the Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife, Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, after some ten years of marriage. It’s on one end of city and is huge. You need to have 2-3 hours of time if you are a history buff. Palace is grand and has huge grounds. The paintings on wall, on ceiling, walls and sculptures on wall are impressive.
Allianz Arena
If you are mad about football, you cannot miss this place. The place is grand and visible from distance while you are coming from Airport. It’s a unique architecture and well-made stadium. Visit their museums and do not forget to take an official tour of stadium at fixed hours. The Tours takes you to various parts of the stadium and like a small child; you would be engrossed in the countless stories of success and failures. It grows on you.
Viktualienmarkt
Over the years, the market has evolved from a farmers’ market to a popular market for fresh food and delicatessen. It offers exotic ingredients that are not available anywhere else in the area, and is renowned for its diversity and size: 140 stalls and shops offering flowers and plants, fruits and vegetables, venison and fowl, eggs, butter, honey, fish, meat, sausages, herbs, spices, delicatessens, wine and tea are assembled on an area covering 22,000 square metres.
Marienplatz and Karlsplatz
This is city centre with lot of walking which can be done easily as you are among people. This is also the prime shopping area. You may get good deals at some time of the year but you will get great experience at any time of the year. If the kids are bored and need a diversion, head to KarlsplatzStachus and the ObletterSpeilwaren store, the best and largest in Munich, with an estimated 16000 toys to choose from. This is no ordinary store, and you can take the little ones from floor to floor, each one a different theme, and there will definitely be something in there of interest. Whether that will end up costing you a little extra for your day out is another matter.
Maximilian Strabe
This is one of the streets which allow you to splurge in your high end shopping. If LV, MK, PRADA, GUCCI ring instant bell in your ears, you need to directly head to this street to shut these bells and get their cash register ringing.
Night Life
Munich has a lot of young population and hence a rocking night life. At night if you are young couple, then Munich has an area called by locals the Banana strip as it’s a crescent shaped area. It has night clubs. We went on a Tuesday night at 10 PM and we could find exactly ten people counting us! Then slowly and finally the place was pretty full with approx 100 people inside and outside. Music was good and drinks were cheap. It’s accessible by train and ten minutes’ walk from the station. It’s a group of 12 Discs and I am sure on weekend it gets crazy. So do make sure to have Saturday night blocked in Munich.
